Invest in Spices

The best way to add healthy flavor to your foods is through an array of spices. Creating your own spice blends, as opposed to buying prepackaged seasoning packets can help you avoid excess sodium, as well as many unwanted preservatives. Relying on spices will also help you cut down on regular table salt that raises sodium levels and unhealthy fats like butter or margarine. Here is a compilation of some of my favorite spices and how to utilize them in various types of cuisine.

Cumin:

Cumin is one of my favorite spices to incorporate in various dishes. It has a nutty, slightly spicy flavor that helps it pair with many combinations. One of my favorite uses is on sweet potatoes with cinnamon and salt. It is also great for flavoring mexican dishes when combined with the meat.

Garlic Powder:

Garlic powder is a staple seasoning when you don't have the time to mince fresh garlic. It adds great flavor to anything ranging from pasta sauce, to guacamole, and even popcorn.

Lemon Pepper:

Lemon pepper is a great alternative to traditional pepper, while still providing a kick. The tang from the lemon comes through and brings bold flavor to chicken, fish, pasta dishes, adn even a great topper for avocado toast.

Everything but the Bagel Seasoning:

This is my current favorite seasoning that can be found at Trader Joes. This seasoning is composed of poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic, onion, and salt. It's the perfect addition to any dish, and I've been using it daily on avocado toast and eggs.
